Gardening with Children

Tazewell held weekly gardening sessions April
through June with children at two Tazewell County
branch libraries.

t the Tazewell branch, thirteen children planted red,
white, and blue flowers — petunias, impatiens, daisies,
coneflowers, and hollyhocks — using the book Every
Little Seed as their guide, and helped plant library
planters during National Garden Week.

t the Bluefield branch, nineteen children planted a
full vegetable garden and a pollinator garden. The
club hopes these young gardeners grow into future
members!

unty Christian School Junior Garden Club
s had an impressive year.
Students learned about recycling and repurposing by
creating vases from bottles to give flower gifts to
their mothers.
They studied the Virginia Big-Eared Bat — native to
our area — and created artwork celebrating it.
Students were introduced to the workings of the
NexTrex recycling project that helps alleviate plastics
going into landfills. Collection bins were placed in the
school to help. The Town and Country GC earned a
bench made from recycled plastics which was placed
at the public library, making a lasting community
contribution.
The club also planted marigolds from seeds saved
from last year 's plants, made fairy gardens from
succulents, and honored veterans by placing a
memorial wreath at the Blue Star Memorial Garden.
Thirteen-year-old Abram painted an eagle for the
club's Blue Star Memorial Byway tribute in honor of
America's 250th anniversary. The memorial wreath
was made by Sandy Yun.
